Common Mental Performance Blocks

Common Mental Performance Blocks

I’ve collected HUNDREDS of Performance Assessments from In-person Seminars and Online Data.

And after analyzing the results, I found 12 MAJOR ROADBLOCKS holding athletes back from their full potential.

These aren’t random guesses—these are the most common struggles, ranked in the 70-90% percentile of responses from REAL athletes.

Over the next few days, I’m breaking down each mental roadblock - The #1 issue affecting performance will surprise you!

I’ve already shared 3 major blocks which you can check out here!!

MENTAL BLOCK #12: YOUR ANGER & FRUSTRATION KILL YOUR PERFORMANCE

Ever get so mad or angry after a bad play that it ruins the rest of your game?

Your team is down on points and instead of making smart plays, you spiral down in frustration? Your reaction time slows down. Your decision-making gets reckless. You tense up, making mistakes more easily. You’re so pissed off and angry.

That’s because anger hijacks your brain. Instead of staying focused, you’re stuck dwelling on the mistakes, overthinking, and trying to force plays.

But here is the thing. Anger can be a very useful fuel if you learn how control it—but it’s most certainly a performance killer if you let it control you.

MENTAL BLOCK #11: YOU HAVE TROUBLE LETTING GO OF A BAD GAME OR A BAD PLAY

If you’re still obsessing about last week’s game, last month, or even last season, it’s KILLING your confidence and future performance.  Fixating on your mistakes can just make them feel worse. You start hesitating instead of trusting your instincts. You start playing not to mess up, instead of to win. And You carry doubt into every shift, rep, or game.

The best athletes find their lessons and move forward fast. If you can’t let go, you can’t grow.

MENTAL BLOCK #10: YOU OVERTHINK AND OVER ANALYZE YOUR TECHNIQUE AND PERFORMANCE

Ever catch yourself breaking down every little mistake in real time—where to put your hands, how to shift your weight, whether your form is perfect?

Welcome to analysis paralysis. Instead of playing freely, you’re stuck in your head, second-guessing every move which immediately pulls you out of Flow State and puts you behind the 8 ball.

This causes your reactions to slow down and makes it feel like you can’t catch up. You lose flow and play stiff. You focus on perfection instead of execution.

Overthinking is a Flow State Killer. The best athletes trust their instincts.

MENTAL BLOCK #9: YOU ATTACH YOUR SELF WORTH TO HOW WELL YOU PERFORM

If you feel like you’re only as good as your last game, you’re trapped in a dangerous cycle.

When you win, you feel on top of the world. When you lose, you feel like a failure—not just in sports, but in life.

You ride an emotional rollercoaster, always chasing validation. One bad game crushes your confidence. You stop enjoying the sport and start fearing failure.

Your value isn’t based on stats. When you stop tying your worth to results, you’ll play with freedom, confidence, and passion.

MENTAL BLOCK #8:YOU WORRY ABOUT WHAT OTHERS THINK OF YOU

Are you playing to win or playing not to look bad? If you’re constantly worried about what coaches, teammates, or fans think, you’re holding yourself back.

You start hesitating instead of trusting your instincts. You play super safe to try and avoid mistakes instead of making plays that could move the game forward. You waste mental energy on things you can’t control.

The best athletes don’t seek approval—they create it through performance. Let go of the fear. Play freely. Dominate.

MENTAL BLOCK #7: YOU ARE EASILY FRUSTRATED FROM HIGH EXPECTATIONS

You expect to dominate. You expect perfection. And when things don’t go as planned? Frustration takes over, and your game completely falls apart.

You get angry instead of adjusting as you go. You lose focus on the present moment. You spiral mentally, making mistakes worse.

Getting caught in the anger, makes it harder to think clearly or adjust. Your focus shifts from what’s next to what went wrong, pulling you out of the present moment. As frustration builds, mistakes pile up, creating a downward spiral that’s tough to recover from.

The key here is to expect greatness—but stay flexible. The best athletes adapt, not overreact.

MENTAL BLOCK #6: YOUR EXCESS ANXIETY, WORRY AND NERVES ARE HOLDING YOU BACK

You train hard. You know you have the skills. But when it’s game time, anxiety takes over—tight muscles, racing thoughts, and hesitation replace your confidence.

Your body tenses up, making movements stiff and slow. Your mind races, making decision-making harder. You play scared, focusing on mistakes instead of execution.

Nervous energy is normal—but when you learn to control it, you unlock peak performance.

MENTAL BLOCK #5: YOUR SELF-DOUBT IS CRUSHING YOUR CONFIDENCE

Do you have that little voice in your head saying " I’m not good enough" or "What if I mess up?" “ I don’t belong here” “ I’m not that skilled”—this voice is  not just annoying, it’s holding you back.

The more you listen, the more you start believing these limitations that are not even real. Instead of trusting your instincts, you hesitate. Instead of playing aggressively, you hold back, afraid to make a mistake. You shrink your game, playing safe instead of making an impact.

But here’s the truth: Self-doubt is a liar. The only way to silence it is to take action, trust your preparation, and play with confidence.

The best athletes trust their training.

MENTAL BLOCK #4: YOU OBSESS ABOUT THE FUTURE RESULT OF THE GAME

Are you playing to win or playing not to lose?

Playing to win means trusting your skills, taking smart risks, and staying aggressive in the moment. Playing not to lose means hesitating, overthinking, and letting fear dictate your decisions. One mindset leads to confidence and success. The other keeps you stuck, afraid of making a mistake.

When your mind is stuck on "What happens if I mess up?" or "What if I blow my chance?", you're no longer in the moment—you're in your head.

You hesitate instead of playing instinctively. You get stuck in fear, not flow. You are focusing on things you can’t control instead of the task at hand.

The best athletes don’t think about what happens if they fail—they’re too locked in on making the next play.

MENTAL BLOCK #3: YOU FEEL CONSTANTLY DISAPPOINTED WITH YOURSELF AND YOUR PERFORMANCE?

No matter how well you play, it never feels good enough. You leave games frustrated, picking apart every mistake, wishing you had done more, and you keep beating yourself up.

You focus more on what went wrong than what went right. You lose confidence because you never feel satisfied. You stop enjoying the game and start chasing perfection—which doesn’t exist.

Wanting to improve is great. But if disappointment is your default, you’ll never feel good enough—no matter how good you actually are. Shift your mindset, and your performance will follow.

MENTAL BLOCK #2: YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE LETTING DOWN YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Do you play for yourself or to meet everyone else’s expectations? If you’re constantly worried about disappointing coaches, teammates, or family, you’re putting unnecessary pressure on yourself.

You play tight and cautious instead of aggressive and confident. You focus on pleasing others, not playing your game. You let external pressure control your mindset.

The best athletes own their performance—they don’t hand the keys to someone else’s expectations.

MENTAL BLOCK #1: YOU HAVE A BURNING DESIRE TO BE THE BEST, BUT LACK MENTAL TRAINING

You train hard. You push yourself. You have the desire to be great. But here’s the truth—talent and hard work aren’t enough if your mind isn’t trained to handle pressure, setbacks, and high-stakes moments.

You can have all the skills, but without mental toughness, they won’t show up when it counts. If you don’t control your mind, your emotions will control you. The best athletes don’t just train their body—they train their mind to stay confident, focused, and locked in under any conditions.

If you’re serious about becoming the best, it’s time to go beyond just physical training. Your mind is the real game-changer.
